The single storey structure includes full height glazed screens in a regular rhythm along the front and sides of the building and insulated panels in a matching pattern to the rear. All topped with a barrel, vaulted roof.

Internally the buildings structure remains, exposed and provides a canteen, kitchen, training room, multi faith space with washing facilities and welfare accommodation, but is more multi-functional than that simple description implies.

Staff use the space as overspill offices, meeting space for work or social discussions and as a breakout space in which to escape the immediate demands of their separate roles.

The building is extremely well used throughout each 24, hour period, with the night kitchen providing much needed facilities to staff working night or early morning shifts. The building is also very environmentally efficient. It uses natural ventilation through roof terminals with supplementary fans which activate according the changing internal atmosphere, led lighting with acoustic baffles and an automatically monitored environmental management system.

The project has been and continues to be a success in no small part due to the close working relationship of the design and construction teams, which included; South wales Police, Willmott Dixon, Bingham Hall, Hurley’s and Bridgend Council.

The project was granted six awards in the LABC building awards, including the All Wales ‘Best Inclusive Building’ category.
