Initially a project involving only the provision of a third storey above the Police Headquarters building originally built during the second world war as part of a munitions site, the project expanded to include the alteration and refurbishment of the original building and the provision of an entrance block at one end. The new accommodation comprises a light weight structure and cladding built of the original reinforced concrete frame and provides a contrast to the original facing brickwork walls. All of the new accommodation is topped with barrel, vaulted roofs with curved eaves and hidden gutters.

Internally welfare facilities are linked with the four separate stairs and the office areas are generally open plan but with meeting rooms in key locations.

The completed arrangement has served as a key to a programme of reorganisation and consolidation of the South Wales Police building stock and is providing facilities appropriate to contemporary policing.
